'90s Childhood Fashion Trends: Then and Now

'90s Childhood Fashion Trends: Then and Now

We all know fashion is cyclical, but who would have thought '90s fads like chokers and Hypercolor shirts would return so soon? No matter how absurd, every tween closet staple seems to have come back around again (thankfully with a more stylist twist). See how these old trends stack up against their new iterations

CROP TOPS: Britney Spears in 1999 vs. Taylor Swift in 2014
Originally popular mostly with teens, '90s crop tops skewed ultra casual and were paired with low-rise pants. Today crop tops are more streamlined and chic, often only revealing a sliver of skin above a high-waisted garment.

CHOKERS: Shannen Doherty in 1992 vs. Anna Kendrick in 2013
Tight velvet chokers with severe dangling pendants were the accessory du jour in the '90s (and were often paired with the decade's ubiquitous dark lipstick). The modern equivalent comes in liquid metal form, like this sleek, sophisticated collar.

JELLY SHOES: Vintage fashion spread in 1983 vs. designer Rachel Antonoff in 2012
Old-school jelly shoes were pure plastic and, as proven by this old photo, occasionally even worn with socks. They've returned several times since then in their original form, but only recently have jellies actually made sense. The colorful footwear remains playful, but now comes in a variety of shapes with more substantial and comfortable soles.
